Crew mental health in the maritime sector has become an increasingly important topic that was overlooked for many years. Long sea voyages, separation from family, isolation, and intense working conditions can lead to mental health issues such as stress, anxiety, and depression among crew members. Recent amendments to the MLC 2006 convention encourage shipowners and operators to take measures for crew mental health. Many P&I clubs have also begun including mental health support programs in their coverage. At Marine Med Assistance, we coordinate comprehensive crew mental health services at Turkish ports: Individual Psychological Counseling: Coordination of face-to-face or online psychological support for crew members on vessels waiting at port. Partnered psychologists specialized in maritime psychology provide effective support by understanding the challenges crew face. Stress Management Training: Group training delivered by partnered specialists teaches crew stress management techniques. These trainings offer practical tools to enhance mental resilience during long voyages. Crisis Intervention: Coordination of emergency psychological support following traumatic events on board (accidents, loss, violence). Our coordinated crisis intervention specialists can provide support to crew within 24 hours of the incident. Coordination of these services is quite straightforward for ship agents. When a request is submitted, we identify the appropriate specialist for the crew's needs and organize the service as quickly as possible. Mental health support is not just a humanitarian responsibility but also an operational investment. Mentally healthy crew work more safely and efficiently.
